So apparently, dA finally has official support for art commissions.
They've already rolled out the new commissions widget for beta testers which makes handling commission transactions very convenient.
This sounded like a really nice new feature, so I tried to put it up.
(I'm open for colored cel-style digital drawing commissions, by the way. Message me if you're interested!).
It looked pretty neat. It was a little off-putting that it makes you set prices in terms of points.
But it does show that you CAN pay (and earn) in terms of real currency/real money. It seems to be built on top of their existing premium download scheme which they put up several months ago.
Here's where it becomes a bone of contention:
I noticed that dA takes a substantial cut if you use their system: If the commissioner pays $20, you earn $16. That's 20%! Not even Diablo's RMAH takes that much!
Compare this to if you had an actual PayPal account that your commissioner can send payment to: for merchants, PayPal takes roughly 4% + a fixed fee(around $0.30) per transaction.
Granted, it does save the person accepting commissions the inconvenience of having to put up and manage a PayPal account (which isn't that much harder than getting a dA page up. And some restrictions are lifted as long as you link a credit card).
But the people who CAN'T get a PayPal account running are likely the same people who don't have credit cards (yet) because they don't earn enough or don't live in a place where credit cards are commonplace for younger people.
Now, I like dA and what it stands for for artists of this age. And I appreciate all the free service and opportunities it provides to artists. And I also appreciate all the hard work dA employees do to make this happen. And I can probably speculate some reasons why they'd kinda *need* a bigger cut compared to an online game's auction house or PayPal.
But I'm not quite convinced by any of the reasons I can imagine.
So this payment scheme seems a bit unfair to me. At the very least, it's an uncompetitive alternative to having a PayPal account.
What do you think?

Yeah. I dunno if some people were just trollin' or if they didn't know what they were talking about or if dA is being inconsistent, 'cause I've read from some people that you can convert points back to money. I don't think so though.
It does say in dA's Points Rules to Remember that "3. You are unable to convert Points back into currency."
That's precisely why I thought it was off-putting that the widget forces you to set prices in terms of points (as if to deceptively encourage its use) even if commissioners do have the option of paying with money.
I do feel a little bad for those under 18 who want to commission others and don't have access to a Paypal account, but I guess with the amount of points I'd be charging it wouldn't make much of a difference anyway.
And commissions are a make-once-then-get-paid-once thing.
From all the complaints in the comments though (now that I've just read them), it looks like dA might end up having to think of a better pricing scheme.
